I went to Smiths at the weekend and the food was very good – authentic fish and chips. Not cheap – it was around $17 for cod and chips but they were the best fish and chips I’ve ever had in Singapore and they serve them in paper (which is how it should be!) and you get salt and vinegar on your table (hooray!). Also it is the only place I know of which makes proper chips from fresh potatoes instead of using frozen chips. I’ll definitely be going back :)

Well, I can’t recommend it as I haven’t been there yet; I’m hoping to go this week sometime – but there’s a new chippy down Tanjong Katong Rd that I’ve heard some good things about. It’s called Smiths and is supposedly run by a British person ……..AND they do mushy peas :)

It’s near Poole Rd.

If you think that chicken is the speciality of the other place, maybe I’ll give them a second chance and try that one day, but I wasn’t impressed with their fish and chips at all.

Despite the name, I have a strong feeling that the chicken is really their main specialty as I see everyone ordering that. Where would you recommend for proper fish and chips in Singapore?

They’re not proper fish and chips and I wish they would stop using the British flag as they’re giving British fish and chips a bad name IMHO.

The chips are more like potato croquettes than proper chips and I hate the way they stick pepper on everything – yuck.

Yeah the chicken’s real cheap! But definitely not for everyday consumption. I think two portions of it would be enough to induce a sore throat.

They sound (and look) real fattening. But the way you describe the mars bar… ooooh I wanna have it right now!

Hey if you do try out the Chippy version, let me know if it’s good!

I’ll make sure I try it when I go to City Hall the next time! And seriously, the price is far too cheap. Kind of shocking to see that actually.

As for fried mars bar, I think I’ll most probably die from a bad sore throat if I ever eat it. Haha.

I can clearly remember my first deep-fried Mars bar experience at Bondi Beach. It’s a local speciality there, with stars like Keanu Reeves etc hanging out in some of the bars there regularly. It was absolutely delicious, with the batter giving it an almost crunchy/peanut-buttery texture (I swear that’s the closest way I can describe it). It’s like a super soft ‘goreng pisang’ just oozing with hot caramel. They also cost around A$3 for a normal-sized (not even King-sized) bar in Australia.

I will definitely find this place and hit it up quickfast, although not too often, or my gf is gonna complain something shocking! :)

It’s a fad started off by the Scottish I think… Not too sure about that. But it sure looks like one sinful, calorie filled, artery clogging piece of snack that’s also supremely delicious – i heard it comes with ice cream! I want one!

At least, everything except the fried mars bars. Seriously, how in the world is -THAT- done? If you try them, you definitely have to blog and give me the low down on those.
